Maui is often called the jewel of Hawaii, and it truly lives up to this title. With stunning landscapes, cascading waterfalls, and lush rainforests, the island is a paradise for hikers. As a local, I have explored many trails across Maui, and I want to share five of my top hiking adventures. Each trail not only offers breathtaking views but is also perfect for family outings. Get ready to lace up your hiking boots for some unforgettable family fun!

1. Pipiwai Trail

The Pipiwai Trail is a beloved family hike that highlights the lush beauty of East Maui. Beginning at the Kipahulu Visitor Center in Haleakalā National Park, this 4-mile round trip takes you through dense bamboo forests and past scenic waterfalls.

Along the way, you will encounter the impressive Waimoku Falls, which plunges an astounding 400 feet into a natural pool. This hike is well-maintained and has a variety of sights that keep both kids and adults engaged. As you make your way through the twisting paths, be sure to stay hydrated and pack some healthy snacks to keep your energy up!

2. Twin Falls

For families seeking an easy hike that everyone can enjoy, Twin Falls in Haiku is the place to be! This short, 2-mile round trip offers amazing rewards, including beautiful waterfalls that are perfect for a refreshing swim.

The hike is manageable even for younger kids, making it an ideal choice for family outings. During your journey, you will get a chance to explore the rich flora and fauna. There's nothing quite like the magical experience of standing beneath a waterfall, feeling the cool mist on your face.

3. Sliding Sands Trail

For families ready for a more adventurous outing, the Sliding Sands Trail at Haleakalā is a must-try. This trail leads you deep into a dormant volcano, presenting you with otherworldly landscapes and sweeping panoramic views that feel like stepping onto another planet.

While the entire trail spans about 11 miles one way, you have the flexibility to hike a shorter distance and still enjoy stunning scenery. Many families choose to hike only the first 2 miles, where you can capture incredible photos against the backdrop of colorful volcanic features. Don’t forget your camera to document this unforgettable experience!

4. Waihe'e Ridge Trail (# pick)

The Waihe'e Ridge Trail is one of Maui's most breathtaking hiking experiences, offering panoramic vistas that showcase the island's natural beauty. This trail winds through a diverse landscape, featuring lush greenery, towering trees, and vibrant flowers, all while providing stunning views of the surrounding mountains and coastline.

The hike spans approximately 5 miles round trip and ascends about 1,500 feet, making it a moderately challenging trek suitable for those with a reasonable level of fitness. The trailhead is located at the end of Waihe'e Valley, where hikers are greeted by the sounds of chirping birds and the rustle of leaves in the gentle breeze. Make sure to get their early to grab a parking spot!

  1. Hiking the Kapalua Coastal Trail in Maui

The Kapalua Coastal Trail is a stunning pathway that showcases the natural beauty of Maui's coastline. Stretching approximately 3.1 miles, this trail offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, lush landscapes, and the chance to spot local wildlife.

Along the Kapalua Coastal Trail, visitors may encounter areas designated as nesting sites for endangered bird species, such as the Hawaiian Petrel (Ua'u) and the Hawaiian Goose (Nene). These birds are vital to the island's ecosystem, and their nesting areas are protected to ensure their survival. Hikers are encouraged to respect these zones and keep a safe distance to avoid disturbing the birds during their critical breeding season.

After enjoying the scenic views and the unique wildlife along the trail, a delightful treat awaits at the Burger Shack located at the Ritz Carlton. Known for its delicious burgers, shakes, and fries, this popular eatery is the perfect way to reward yourself after a day of exploration. Indulge in a refreshing shake or a tasty meal while taking in the stunning ocean views from the resort.
